1Abstract:Infection with one of the five strains of dengue virus produces life-long immunity to only this strain and temporary cross-immunity to other strains. In this talk, I will present the mathematical model we developed to evaluate the impact of mitigation strategies for two strains of dengue virus transmission taking into account cross-immunity. We analyzed the existence and stability of the disease free equilibrium and two boundary equilibria with the existence of only one strain, and proved the existence of the interior equilibrium with the coexistence of two strains. In addition, we found backward bifurcation exists. and optimized the mitigation strategies according to Pontryagin's Maximum Principle, taking into account corresponding costs. The numerical simulation results showed that increasing the economic costs may not increse the effectiveness of optimal control greatly, and improving the awareness of humans and reinforcing the vector control could effectively reduce the number of primarily infected humans.
